Intro to Digital Imaging

YeeB_376_Layers.jpg

While this was an early project for digital imaging class, it is a simple and colorful image that incorporates some of the basic principles of Photoshop's primary features. This piece is not that advanced but it did give me some valuable experience and an open mind of how to use Photoshop and its capabilities. This assignment has given me a basic understanding of layering, casting foreshadows, text, and saturation of colors of the photo image.

Photo Layering

This was my first masking assignment. Masking is the process of selecting an area of an image, hide it then revealing the layers below. Basically, in this image, the picture of me originally had a recreational park behind me. With masking, I was able to mask out that background and made myself appear in this image of a house that I never visited. It's a snap once you're familiar with the feature but for beginners, it's quite difficult.

Guess what originally doesn't belong in this photo? In this image, the concentration of the light source is crucial. The objective was to surf the web and find 5 images that correspond and match with our background image's light source flawlessly. This proved difficult as web images have a lot of imperfections. To match an image from the internet to ours was extremely challenging.

It may look simple but the actual process is very confusing! The TV was from another photo but the image on the screen was taken with my camera. Using a special filter, layering, cropping, and masking, I got the photo to appear as if it was appearing on television. And lowering the opacity and adjusting the gradients, the imagery appears saturated and colorless to match with the old fashion TV screen.

To me, this was getting into the weird factor. In this piece, we had to grab two photos from the web and try to merge them together. The male character in this photo was originally colored with a city background behind him. I reduced the gradient and saturation and added some soft tone to make him appear light black and white. With the waterfall in a separate layer underneath the boy, I made a mask selection and eliminated the areas where I wanted the waterfall scene to show on the boy's face. The waterfall image was then merged into the selected area from the face down to the neck and I made a final cleanup around the eyes. One unique aspect of this is that it can play tricks on the eyes.

The saying goes that a Chimera is a mythical creature with the head of a lion, a body of a goat, and a tail of a snake. This Chimera has the body of a turkey and the head and legs of a chicken. Put them together and you get a Turken! This was another example of selecting an area of an image specifically and mask out unnecessary elements then combine them together. One of the most unusual assignments I've had to do and probably won't do again.

I always get a kick out of this. It is just a simple animated clip that I created from Photoshop. The animation is not perfect but it's still fun to watch. Both characters where grabbed from Google Images and I did some custom animation from the way the eyes move to the way the mouth closes. Just watch and see...

For my Final Assignment for Digital Imaging, the main focus was to create our own advertisement banner. In this case I went with advertising for a concert. First was importing the background image of outer space, second was masking the title logo and the starship image. Next, I masked the image of the orchestra and lowered the transparency and color saturation. Last was choosing a font and advertisement info. Almost looks real, but for loyal Star Trek fans including myself, will notice one slight error in my advertisement info.
